Because sometimes, just knowing the names is all it takes for you to do the job right!
.Do you know how drywall name came about? The manufacturers started calling anything that wasn’t wet plaster – Drywall. Companies started making them and tried hard to make their own name stick as a brand:
When you deal with drywall there are many options that you need to take into consideration.
Let’s start with Types, among many variations of drywall, the major ones are:
Within these 4 major categories, there are all the following subtypes:
Let’s start with sizes – Size does matter when we talk about drywall.
Sizes are not only a preference of the installer, but it could be chosen based on the method of installation to save on materials when smaller sheets are chosen or to speed up the installation process using bigger sheets. But many of the manufacturers sell the sheets in sizes of 4’x8’, 4’x10’, 4’x12’ and 4’x14’
Special order for the bigger 4×14 but they make it and deliver it, so you can install it!
There are also thicknesses that most manufacturers start at ¼”, the next one up is 3/8” that is not much used on builds but installers like it to use thinner sheets to do curved walls in layers, then the two most popular are ½” and 5/8” because with these two you can build multi-layers with any fire rating required on your projects.
Drywall is also engineered to cover for special uses and needs, like moisture-resistant drywall, Sound barriers, Mold resistant, fire resistant and bend-specific fiberglass-reinforced products do curved walls.
Besides Drywall, you will need a bunch of other materials to have a professional job done on any wall.
You will need to know what type and size of fasteners to use. The type of Tape to buy, the different layers to apply of joint compound and their consistencies, and the many different types of corner beads.
When you hear fasteners, in this day and age, you will be dealing with screws.
The type and size will vary depending on the drywall material that you use. The size of the screw will have to be long enough to go through the drywall thickness that you are using, plus the same length or more into the wood below.
Drywall sizes that are mostly produced can be found in local home improvement centers in the following sizes:
